If you’ve spent any time in Ram or Cummins Facebook groups lately, you’ve probably seen the debate:
Are the 2025+ Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks truly the “6th Gen Cummins”?
Some Ram fans say absolutely yes. Others argue that the newest trucks are really a “Gen 5.5” — an evolution of the 5th Gen platform rather than a clean-sheet sixth generation.
So… who’s right?
Let's break it down.

Why Generations Matter to Diesel Enthusiasts
For Cummins fans, the different "generations" aren’t just marketing labels — they help us understand:
- Body styles
- Chassis changes
- Engine architecture
- Transmission platforms
- Aftermarket compatibility
When a Ram earns a new “generation” title, most of us expect major mechanical and structural changes, not just styling updates.
The “It’s Not a Real 6th Gen” Argument (Gen 5.5 Crowd)
A large group of Cummins owners believe the 2025+ Ram HD trucks are better described as a mid-cycle refresh rather than a full generational leap.
Their reasoning:
- Same basic chassis architecture as 2019–2024
- Same general cab structure
- Still using the 6.7L Cummins platform
- No ground-up redesign
From this perspective, the newest trucks feel more like an extension of the 5th Gen rather than a brand-new platform.
To these owners, a “true” 6th Gen would likely require:
- All-new engine architecture
- Major frame/cab redesign
- Completely new suspension layout
- Radically different driveline
Since those changes didn’t happen across the board, they call it Gen 5.5.

The “It Absolutely Is 6th Gen” Argument
On the other side of the fence, many fans believe the 2025+ Ram HD trucks deserve full 6th Gen status.
Here’s why.
Major Exterior & Interior Overhaul
The 2025+ trucks feature heavily revised styling, updated lighting, refreshed interiors, and modernized tech that visually separates them from earlier 5th Gens.
ZF 8-Speed Automatic Transmission
This is one of the biggest mechanical changes.
The long-running Aisin and 68RFE automatics are gone, replaced by a ZF 8-speed automatic designed specifically for heavy-duty use.
That alone represents a massive generational shift in how the truck drives and performs.
Updated 6.7L Cummins
While still a 6.7L, the engine received meaningful updates:
- Revised internals
- Improved combustion efficiency
- Higher factory torque ratings
- Refined calibration
It’s an evolution, but a meaningful one.
Electronics & Software Architecture
New control modules, updated network architecture, and advanced driver-assistance systems further separate these trucks from earlier generations.

Why This Feels Different Than Past Generation Changes
Older generation jumps were often obvious:
- 1st Gen to 2nd Gen body style, 3rd to 4th, etc
- 24-Valve to Common Rail
- Leaf-Spring Rear to Coil-Spring Rear
Modern Rams, you could argue, evolve more gradually. Emissions regulations, safety requirements, and manufacturing costs push manufacturers toward refinement instead of total reinvention.
That makes generation lines blurrier than they used to be.
So… Is There a “Correct” Answer?
Not really.
Both sides make valid points.
If your definition of a new generation requires a ground-up redesign, then Gen 5.5 makes sense.
If your definition includes major driveline, transmission, technology, and styling changes, then calling it 6th Gen also makes sense.

What Matters More Than the Name
Regardless of what you call it, the 2025+ Cummins-powered Ram HD trucks offer:
- Stronger factory torque numbers
- Smoother transmissions
- Improved drivability
- Better interiors
- Modern tech
For most owners, how the truck performs matters far more than what generation label it carries.
FASS Motorsports’ Take
Here at FASS Motorsports, many of us are diehard Cummins fans; and this is how we see it:
The 2025+ Ram 2500 and 3500 represent a major evolution of the Cummins platform.
Whether you call it 6th Gen or Gen 5.5, the ZF 8-speed alone is a step forward — never mind the overhauled styling and other updates
And let’s be honest… us Cummins fans are going to argue about it either way. That’s half the fun.

Final Thoughts
Does the 6th Gen Cummins exist?
Maybe. Maybe not.
What’s certain is that the newest Cummins-powered Rams are pretty darn capable; and by most of the feedback we've seen, an awesome evolution of the Ram/Cummins partnership.
