Design and Features

Ram redesigned the 4th generation to balance modern aesthetics with traditional toughness. The exterior received a bold grille, aerodynamic improvements, and sharper lines that enhanced both appearance and performance.

The interior was upgraded significantly, offering a range of trims from utilitarian work trucks to luxurious models featuring leather seats, advanced infotainment systems, and premium sound systems.

Many enthusiasts consider the 2013-2018 Ram 2500/3500 to be the most desirable 4th Gen Ram—as the 2010-2012 model years did not receive all the updates.

Innovative storage solutions, such as the RamBox Cargo Management System, added to the truck's practicality, providing secure, weatherproof storage compartments integrated into the bed walls.

The 6.7 Cummins Diesel Engine

One of the standout features of the 4th generation Ram trucks is the availability of the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. This inline-six engine, first introduced halfway through 2007, the 6.7 continued to evolve throughout the 4th generation, offering improvements in power, torque, and efficiency.

Performance

The 6.7 Cummins engine was available in multiple configurations depending on the year and trim level, with power outputs ranging from 350 to over 385 horsepower and torque figures climbing as high as 930 lb-ft by the end of the generation.

This remarkable torque allowed the truck to achieve best-in-class towing capabilities, with maximum towing capacities exceeding 31,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Reliability and Durability

The Cummins engine is renowned for its durability and long service life, making it a favorite among truck enthusiasts and professionals who demand reliability. Features such as a cast-iron block, forged-steel crankshaft, and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system contributed to the engine's robust performance and efficiency.

Emissions and Innovations

To meet increasingly stringent emissions standards in 2007, the 6.7 Cummins incorporated advanced systems such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

While these systems helped reduce environmental impact, they also introduced complexity, requiring proper maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

Transmission Options

The 4th generation Ram was the last HD truck in the United States to offer a manual transmission.

For this reason among others, 6-speed manual 2010-2018 Ram 2500s and 3500s are highly sought after—often commanding $10,000-$20,000 more than the equivalent truck with an automatic transmission.

From 2010-2018, Ram HD trucks paired the Cummins engine were equipped with one of several transmission options:

  1. 6-Speed Manual Transmission: A favorite for purists and those seeking maximum control, the G56 manual transmission offered simplicity and rugged dependability.

The G56s reputation was further solidified by chronic issues with the 68RFE automatic. Infamous for expensive failures, the 68RFE automatic’s issues made G56-equipped Rams more desirable than ever.

  2. 6-Speed Automatic Transmission: Available in two variants—the 68RFE and the heavy-duty Aisin AS69RC—these transmissions provided smooth shifting and were designed to handle the high torque output of the Cummins engine.

Driving Experience

The 4th generation Ram with the 6.7 Cummins delivered an exceptional driving experience, whether hauling heavy loads or cruising on the highway. Its robust chassis, upgraded suspension systems, and advanced steering technology ensured stability and comfort, even under demanding conditions.

The 4th generation Ram truck with the 6.7 Cummins diesel engine remains a popular choice in the used truck market, thanks to its combination of power, reliability, and versatility.

It has also grown a massive following in the diesel performance community—with thousands of owners building their 2010-2018 Ram 2500/3500 to make 500-1,000 horsepower or more.
