Why EVERYONE Loves the 6.7 Cummins (2007.5–2018)

6.7 Cummins diesel engine overlayed on a Ram truck, 2007.5-2018 model years

Jake Hopkins |

When diesel enthusiasts talk about the “best” modern Cummins engines, the conversation almost always lands on the 2007.5–2018 6.7L Cummins.

This era of Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks represents what many consider the perfect blend of power, durability, tunability, and real-world usability.

It was the first 6.7 Cummins… but not yet the ultra-complex, CGI-block, CP4-equipped version that arrived later. And that’s exactly why so many diesel fans love it.

The Birth of the 6.7 Cummins

The 6.7L Cummins debuted in 2007.5 as the replacement for the legendary 5.9 common rail. Cummins increased displacement, improved airflow, and designed the engine to meet tightening emissions regulations — while still delivering serious torque.

From day one, the 6.7 was built to work:

  • Long stroke inline-six design
  • Cast iron block
  • Forged steel crankshaft
  • High torque output at low RPM

This engine wasn’t about chasing RPM — it was about pulling hard, all day, every day.

Why the 2007.5–2018 Era Is So Special

Diesel fans often separate the 6.7 Cummins into two eras:

  • 2007.5–2018: Cast iron block, CP3 pump
  • 2019+: CGI block, CP4 pump (temporarily)

The earlier generation is loved because it avoided two controversial changes: the CGI block and the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. That alone makes these trucks extremely desirable today.

Factory Power Progression

Throughout its production run, the 6.7 Cummins saw steady power increases:

  • 2007.5: ~350 HP / 650 lb-ft
  • 2010–2012: ~350 HP / 800 lb-ft
  • 2013–2018: up to ~385 HP / 900 lb-ft

Each update made the engine stronger, smoother, and more capable — without sacrificing durability.

Please note: Some G56 (6-speed manual) equipped Rams were detuned; as the G56 transmission was not designed to cope with the power levels of later 6.7 Cummins engines.

Why Diesel Owners Love This 6.7 Cummins

The love for this engine goes far beyond spec sheets.

  • Massive torque: Perfect for towing and hauling.
  • Excellent drivability: Smooth, quiet, and refined.
  • CP3 injection pump: Proven, reliable design.
  • Strong bottom end: Handles big power when built properly.
  • Huge aftermarket support: Parts, tuning, and upgrades everywhere.

It’s a workhorse that can also be a performance monster — which is exactly what diesel enthusiasts want.

Turbo Evolution: Fixed vs VGT

The 6.7 Cummins introduced variable geometry turbochargers (VGT), which helped dramatically improve:

  • Low-RPM spool
  • Towing response
  • Exhaust braking

While early VGT turbos had reliability complaints, later versions proved much more durable — and most owners today enjoy the benefits without major issues.

Common Issues (And Why They’re Manageable)

No diesel platform is perfect, but the 2007.5–2018 6.7 Cummins has issues that are well known and easily addressed.

Emissions Components

EGR coolers, DPF systems, and sensors can fail with mileage — common on all modern diesels.

Fuel System Protection

While the CP3 pump is reliable, clean fuel and proper lift pump pressure are critical for injector life.

Transmission Limits

Stock automatics can struggle once power is significantly increased.

All of these concerns are well documented, widely supported in the aftermarket, and easily improved with the right upgrades.

Performance Potential

The 2007.5–2018 6.7 Cummins responds extremely well to upgrades.

  • 450–550 HP with basic bolt-ons
  • 600–700 HP with fueling and turbo upgrades
  • 800+ HP on built engines

And because of the CP3 pump and cast iron block, these engines have proven to be incredibly durable at higher power levels.

Why Owners Still Seek These Trucks in 2025

In today’s used market, clean 2007.5–2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks are highly desirable because they offer:

  • Modern comfort and technology
  • Strong towing capacity
  • Excellent reliability history
  • Better long-term ownership confidence than newer Ram models

For many buyers, this generation represents the safest and smartest 6.7 Cummins choice.
