Fitment Notes
- VP44 trucks: Hamilton’s application guidance points to the 24-valve 178/208 combo instead (vp-44 trucks need a 178-208).
- 24 valve engines need .018″ or less piston protrusion and at least .038″ valve face depth with a standard gasket.
- Short on piston-to-valve clearance? You can still run an oversize head gasket or cut valve reliefs.
Installation Highlights
Coat the cam with a liberal amount of quality assembly lube and never start the engine without oil pressure. New engine? Lube the oil pump and prime the filter. With fuel disconnected, crank on the starter — no more than 10 seconds at a time — until oil pressure reads or oil reaches the rocker arms. Then run it for five minutes at 1200-1500rpm and shut down. Re-torque or hot-torque the head before adjusting valves, since it changes lash; set lash last. Change the oil after break-in.

- Approved oil required: 15W-40 (or 5W-40 in sub-zero conditions) with adequate zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum — thin or low-additive oils lack the shear strength a flat tappet needs.
- Approved: Valvoline Full Synthetic 15W-40, Valvoline Synthetic Blend 15W-40, Valvoline All-Terrain 15W-40, Schaeffer’s 15W-40, Mobil Delvac Extreme 15W-40, LIQUI MOLY Touring High Tech 15W-40, Driven Racing Oil 15W-40, Redline 15W-40. Acceptable: Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 15W-40, Shell Rotella T5 15W-40.
- Preferred filter: Fleetguard Stratapore LF16035.
- Running a non-approved oil voids the warranty. All warranty claims must include the failed parts and an oil sample.
